Some House members want to know who is a real woman and not a real woman in the WNBA.
Gasoline prices are rising, interest rates are rising, tensions in the Middle East keep rising and there is still a war raging between Russia and Ukraine. But Congress is more worried about the state of College Football and sports. And also about the Women’s National Basketball Association. Priorities are priorities after all. For some reason the WNBA has become the epicenter of the sports cultural wars and its silliness that means nothing. Republican House members sent a letter to WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert on September 17th, wanting clarification on player eligibility standards, player safety, and fan protection policies. Funny how letters have not been sent to other commissioners asking about the same thing.
Representative Marlin Stutzman questioned some language in the league’s collective bargaining agreement that specifies that only women are eligible to play, it does not explicitly define “women” or reference gender identity versus biological sex at birth. The Strait of Hormuz is closed which really impacts American consumers but Stutzman thinks that this is a more important issue facing the American public. “There are no immediate eligibility matters affecting the WNBA, and we strongly denounce the bad-faith efforts to use these topics to demean or marginalize others,” the league said in a statement. The House members want answers by October 16th, how the league defines “women,” and if it doesn’t have a definition, then to provide an explanation as to why Enes Kanter Freedom and Royce White were ineligible to join. Kanter Freedom is looking for his 15 minutes of fame but politics is also an entertainment show which is why the three Republicans are looking to heighten the cultural wars. “As a women’s sports league, the WNBA must ensure the League remains exclusively for biological women. Women should not have to face biological men playing in the WNBA.” The cultural war continues.
