Sorsby’s Decision To Go Pro Takes A Load Off College Football

He wants to go to the NFL.

The college football sports media can now breathe a sigh of relief. The quarterback who gambled and won the right to play for Texas Tech, Brendan Sorsby, is no longer a college football headache. Sorsby plans to apply for the National Football League’s supplemental draft. Sorsby was granted a temporary injunction by a judge on June 8th that appeared to allow him to play for Texas Tech. That brought out the howls from the college football sports media because of unfairness as Sorsby placed more than 9,000 sports bets, totaling at least $90,000, over four years while attending Indiana, Cincinnati and Texas Tech. Sorsby placed at least 40 bets involving Indiana football in 2022. The college football media was worried about the integrity of the game. A note to the college football sports media, integrity has never been high on the list of important items to the National Collegiate Athletic Association. Sorsby attended a gambling rehabilitation program for 35 days.

College football has always depended on gambling, legal or illegal, to boost its profile. The National Collegiate Athletic Association does not have direct deals with gambling companies but provides information to educate the betting ecosystem. Needless to say, members of the Big 12 Conference are thrilled Sorsby is gone. There was some integrity problem the members had although there are programs that probably have less than stellar citizens playing football. “It’s been a challenging week for both our conference and the college athletics landscape,” Big 12 commissioner Brett Yormark said in a statement. “The Big 12 looks forward to moving ahead as 16 strong. We wish Brendan Sorsby success in his future endeavors.” The Big 12 athletic directors showed an awful lot of respect for the judge’s decision by threatening a boycott of Texas Tech athletics.
