Arte Moreno has a tentative deal to sell the business to Kroenke.
The followers of Major League Baseball’s Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim franchise may be rejoicing. The owner of the mediocre baseball team, Arte Moreno, seems to have reached a deal that would see him sell his business to Stan Kroenke sometime in the first quarter of 2027. Kroenke is the owner of the National Football League Los Angeles Rams franchise as well as the National Basketball Association’s Denver Nuggets franchise, the National Hockey League’s Colorado Avalanche franchise, the English Premier League Arsenal Football Club, the Major League Soccer Colorado Rapids franchise and the National Lacrosse League Colorado Mammoth franchise. Kroenke developed the former Hollywood Park racetrack property in Inglewood, California into a stadium-village. He is doing the same thing, building an arena-village in Denver in the parking lot surrounding the city’s arena and is hoping to develop an arena-village in San Diego.
There is a stadium issue in Anaheim. The stadium is in its 61st year of operation and Moreno has in the past attempted to build a stadium-village in Anaheim or pursued opportunities to build stadiums in Tustin and Long Beach. Kroenke has to go through Major League Baseball’s screening process but there is no reason to think that his bid to buy the Angels baseball business from Moreno will be blocked. Kroenke will inherit a lease that ties him to Anaheim until 2032 although it can be extended until 2038. Anaheim Mayor Ashleigh Aitken welcomed the sale news by stating, “I look forward to working with the team’s incoming ownership to advance our city’s priorities around housing, open space and youth sports at the right time.” If Kroenke does buy the team and if he is able to work out a stadium-village deal in Anaheim, his business under California law has to revert to the Anaheim Angels name. But that is a future negotiation.
