LA28 is billing it as a role of a lifetime.
If the 2028 Los Angeles Summer Olympics and Paralympics event is such a financial gold mine why does the LA28 Olympics boss Casey Wasserman need around 60,000 volunteers to make the machinery run? After all, isn’t LA 28 flush with public funding, sponsorship and TV money? Here is a secret about megaevents like the Super Bowl or the Olympics. It is too costly and the events need volunteers because the cost of paying people to work, even at minimum wage, would strain budgets and require even more public funding. The United States taxpayers will be committing one billion dollars to help secure the Games. Los Angeles and California will be throwing in hundreds of millions of taxpayers’ dollars to help finance the event. And now about 60,000 people will volunteer their time.
LA28 is making its pitch and it’s straight out of a Hollywood movie. “Your role of a lifetime is right around the corner. Applications to join the LA28 Volunteer Crew during Games time are now open! Scroll through to see how the crew behind the scenes bring a little magic to every moment and then apply at LA28 dot org.” What does the role entail? Actually quite a bit. “Volunteer roles will be divided into eight areas, communications, driving, guest experience, medical services, ceremonies, operations, sport and technology and will include welcoming spectators and athletes, providing support at venues and offering transport guidance. Within that range, some positions will require specialist skills, such as medical training or proficiency in other languages. Those selected will be required to complete at least 10 shifts, either during the Olympic volunteering period, which will run from March to August 2028, or during the equivalent Paralympic period, scheduled between August and September.” It is a role of a lifetime but it pays nothing because it is the Olympic way.
