Munich Wants A Summer Olympics
Voters in Munich and Bavaria, Germany want to host an Olympics in the future, Munich’s Mayor Dieter Reiter said. “There wasn’t a single outlier, all districts are backing the Olympic bid. I believe we can now approach the application with fresh energy and enthusiasm.” Bavarians want a summer event in 2036, or in 2040 or in 2044. Just because Bavarians by a two to one margin said let’s host the Olympics here doesn’t mean the area will get the nod to be the German nominee to bid for the Olympic event. In about a year, the German Olympic Sports Confederation will decide which area should represent Germany in the potential Olympics bid. Munich is in the race along with Berlin, Hamburg and the Rhine-Ruhr region. Germany also has some history that cannot be ignored if it puts forth Berlin or Munich as its bidder.
In 1936, Adolf Hitler attempted to use the Berlin Games for propaganda purposes and legitimize his rule of the country. In 1972, there was the Munich Massacre where members of the Palestine Liberation Organization’s offshoot Black September killed 11 Israelis. In 2023, Berlin Mayor Kai Wegner gave his support to host the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2036. Wegner stated Berlin is ready and that it will be an “exceptional opportunity” to present a new image of Germany to the world. In 1936, Germany wanted to present a new image of the country to the world with the Berlin Olympics. In 1938, the International Olympic Committee awarded the 1940 Winter Olympics which was pulled from Sapporo, Japan because of the Sino-Japanese War and awarded it to Munich after Hitler invaded Austria and Czechoslovakia. That event was cancelled by World War II.
