2036 Summer Olympics Bids Are Due

Seven countries are interested.

If you are an Olympic organizing committee member and if you want to land the 2036 Summer Olympics, you better act by midnight on Halloween on October 31st. The IOC will not accept any applications for the 2036 contest after that deadline. There are seven potential bidders, Munich, Germany, Budapest, Hungary, India, Qatar, Cape Town, South Africa, Jeonju, South Korea and Istanbul, Turkey. Between November and March, 2027, the applicants will be asked to make “virtual presentations” to the IOC’s Future Host Commission. After that the IOC will make “feasibility assessments” of the bids which will include on site visits and that will last until the end of 2028. The winning bidder will be announced in 2029 and will have seven years to get a site ready for the Olympics summer event in 2036.

IOC President Kirsty Coventry and IOC delegates want to really know one thing. Can you afford the event which is a constant money loser for the public. The questions should be. How much money will a bidder put up and how much public money will be available? Coventry said the bidders will be asked several simple questions, including why they want to host the Games, what they hope to achieve, and how they want their Games to be remembered. “These questions should be your north star. Every future host will answer these questions differently,” she explained. “Ultimately, it is about creating Olympic Games that athletes will love, communities will embrace and future generations will remember.” People like the Olympics competition but don’t want the event in their backyards. The IOC makes too many financial demands, the event never lives up to promises of boosting a local economy, nor is it an economic generator and it is a nuisance for commuters going to work. But political and business leaders want the event that saddles taxpayers with a huge debt.
