Paris or Lyon could host the hockey tournament.
The 2030 Winter Olympics already has a problem. The mayor of Nice, France, Eric Ciotti, is opposing using a local stadium for the 2030 Winter Olympic hockey tournament and is blocking a plan to convert the soccer venue into a temporary ice rink. That is another problem for the local Olympic committee which already has some fiscal problems. The French Alps Games organizers may have two alternatives. An arena in Paris and an area in Lyon, France. The Paris Entertainment Company, which operates two venues, has submitted a bid to host ice hockey. Both venues were used during the 2024 Paris Summer Games. The 2030 Games organizers claimed they have worked with officials from Nice and its wider region, as well as the French government, to find solutions for placing ice hockey within the Olympic hub of Nice. The organizers want to get a sense of where hockey events could be staged by May 11th.
The committee is seeking options in Nice. “A temporary ice rink, intended as a replacement for the originally planned stadium, was studied at other stadiums, mainly for men’s hockey matches. Technical, scheduling, and financial analyses highlighted the limitations of these options, particularly due to their very high cost and impact,” organizers stated. “With a focus on efficiency and budget optimization, the (organizing committee) has decided to broaden its investigations by examining the use of existing facilities in other major metropolitan areas such as Lyon or Paris, particularly those offering a minimum seating capacity of 10,000.” Meanwhile France’s Sports Minister Marina Ferrari said she was working with 2030 Games organizers to determine whether alternative solutions were available in Nice or elsewhere. “Our responsibility now is to begin preparing alternative scenarios in case we encounter difficulties. At this point we are exploring all options, I could not be clearer.” No hockey venue in Nice is a major Olympic problem.
