Walter has many sports holdings.
The Commissioner of the National Basketball Association, Adam Silver, the Commissioner of Major League Baseball, Rob Manfred, and the Commissioner of the Women’s National Basketball Association, Cathy Engelbert, have been very quiet about the legal problem that the soon to be former owner of the Los Angeles Lakers franchise and the owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers franchise Mark Walter is facing. The Securities and Exchange Commission and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York are investigating the financial dealings of Walter and two insurance companies he owns, Delaware Life Insurance Company and its affiliate Clear Spring Life and Annuity. It is alleged that Walter invested far more of those insurance company profits into other businesses he owns than is allowed and that he misidentified those loans or payments as being to outside entities.
Walter has invested in sports franchises in the United States and in Europe. He purchased the Dodgers business in 2012. He bought the Lakers franchise in June 2025. He is now attempting to sell his share of the Lakers business to Bob Iger and Josh Kushner and one thing that seemingly can stop the transaction is Silver telling the NBA Board of Governors to say no to the transaction. That is more than likely not going to happen. Walter has put his share of the English Premiership League Chelsea Football Club up for sale. He is also the owner of the Professional Women’s Hockey League and the Women’s National Basketball Association’s Los Angeles Sparks business. He has a stake in a French soccer team RC Strasbourg and is heavily involved in motor sports and tennis. He is holding onto his Dodgers business, at least for now. Walter is presumed innocent while he is facing the investigation but the fallout of that investigation has started.
