Mavericks ownership wants a new building by 2031.
The ownership group of the National Basketball Association’s Dallas Mavericks franchise has identified two areas in the city that an arena could be built. The Mavericks ownership group wants a basketball-centric arena built by 2031. The basketball business’ lease with the city of Dallas to use the city arena ends following the 2030-31 season. Mavericks CEO Rick Welts told the Dallas Morning News that the business hopes to make an arena site decision around July 1st. Welts’ bosses want to build an arena-village envisioning a 50-acre mixed-use hub surrounding the arena. There could be a competing businesses looking at building a Dallas arena as the National Hockey League’s Dallas Stars ownership wants a hockey-centric arena and surrounding village built somewhere in the Metroplex by 2031 when that business’ lease to use the Dallas arena ends.
In 2025, Welts began the arena game with Dallas and Irving, Texas in the mix. “We’re going to build a brand-new arena and entertainment district in Dallas to really take us into the next 30 years of our history.” The Mavericks ownership would like to build a basketball friendly arena and keep as much of the arena revenue as possible. Meanwhile, the Irving City Council has approved some zoning amendments that could pave the way for the construction of an arena-village. The majority of the Mavericks business is owned by Miriam Adelson, who is the largest shareholder of the Mavericks and her son-in-law, Patrick Dumont, who is the Sands Corporation’s COO. The zoning changes would apply to the 182-acre property, which coincidentally, is owned by an entity connected to the Las Vegas Sands Corporation. There is no arena construction funding plan on the table. How much will the Mavericks’ ownership kick into the project? How much will the public contribute? It’s early in the Dallas arena game.
