The franchise could move if the venue situation is not resolved

Major League Soccer has a Vancouver problem. The Vancouver Whitecaps franchise owner Axel Schuster wants to sell the business but no one, he claims, is interested because the soccer business does not see much money headed its way because of a bad lease agreement with PavCO, the British Columbia provincial owner of the stadium  The league put out a statement which told Vancouver elected officials that it is time to get the stadium situation fixed or it may be the end of the MLS in Canada’s third largest market. “Operational constraints around scheduling and venue access have intensified in 2026, creating untenable conditions for a major league club, with no clear path forward to resolving these challenges in future years. This is not fair to the club or its fans. Meaningful progress is urgently required to establish a sustainable path forward.”

The Whitecaps ownership claims it is missing out on revenues from the sale of food and beverages. There are also days that are unavailable to the team because of other activities in the building. In 2024, an MLS playoff game that was scheduled in the venue could not be played because of a conflict.  “There are interested parties that would like to buy the Whitecaps,” said Vancouver mayor Ken Sim who would like to see an agreement worked out whereby Whitecaps’ ownership could built a stadium in the city “There are interested parties who want to take the Whitecaps out of the city of Vancouver if we do not create an environment, or if there’s no opportunity to have your own stadium. Meanwhile, the 42-year-old Vancouver venue is undergoing another renovation as the stadium will host seven FIFA Men’s World Cup games in 2026. It is not an outdated facility.  FIFA does not choose broken down facilities for its crown jewel events.
