The IOC is years away from selecting the London 2040 host country.
The mayor of London, England wants the International Olympic Committee to award the city the 2040 Summer Olympics. Mayor Sadiq Khan told The Times of London that he wanted the British capital to be “the sporting capital of the world” and getting the Olympics would fit into that plan. London officials released a report claiming that six major sporting events in 2024, delivered $310 million in direct economic impact. London hosted two Major League Baseball games between the New York Mets and Philadelphia Phillies. There were some National Football League games and the UEFA Champions League Final. London has the annual Wimbledon tennis tournament and also has numerous soccer teams in the market. The National Basketball Association did play games in the city but has looked elsewhere for international games. Major League Baseball did not play in London in 2025.
“We could knock it out of the park in relation to the Olympics, using the assets we already have in the aquatics center, the stadium, the velodrome,” Khan said. “And we could have some events outside of London too. London could be a hub. When it comes to major sports events, the public and governments are not unreasonably nervous about a huge amount of money being spent on infrastructure. But the reason why 2040 makes sense for London is because we could do it in a brilliant way but also very cheaply. An Olympics in London wouldn’t cost a fortune, but the benefits would be humongous.” The International Olympic Committee is looking for a 2036 host country and the European Union is on record that Europe should get that event. The IOC doesn’t give back-to-back summer Olympics on the same continent as a rule. Chile, Germany, India, Indonesia and Turkey are among the countries interested in the 2036 Summer Olympics.
