Craig Carton’s Third Act: WFAN Welcomes Back Radio Icon for Afternoon Return

New York’s airwaves are about to hear a familiar voice as Craig Carton, the popular sports radio personality, is finalizing a deal to return to WFAN next month and take over the coveted afternoon drive slot. This move, reported by The Athletic, will mark Carton’s third stretch with the legendary station and is expected to set off a significant lineup reshuffle in WFAN’s weekday programming.

Major Lineup Changes at WFAN

Current afternoon hosts Evan Roberts and Tiki Barber are slated to slide into the midday block from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. as Carton steps into the 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. driver’s seat. Overnight host Chris McMonigle is reportedly a leading candidate to join Carton as his new partner in afternoons. Meanwhile, the long-running midday show with Brandon Tierney and Sal Licata will be dissolved; Licata is a candidate for the nighttime slot vacated by Keith McPherson, while Tierney may be left without a regular show.

A Tumultuous, Historic Career

Carton, now 56, began with WFAN in 2007 before a highly publicized fall in 2017, stemming from a fraud conviction tied to a ticket resale scam meant to cover gambling debts. After serving just over a year in prison, Carton made a triumphant return to WFAN in 2020, reclaiming high ratings with Evan Roberts in afternoons. He left in 2023 to pursue a national role with FS1, where his show “Breakfast Ball” was ultimately cancelled in 2025, paving the way for this latest homecoming.

Reaction From the WFAN Family

Carton’s repeated returns have fueled plenty of debate and bravado among current WFAN hosts. Sal Licata, who addressed the possibility back in July, told listeners he isn’t worried about losing his spot. Yet as Carton prepares to anchor afternoons for a third time, the shakeup brings intrigue and uncertainty to New York’s top sports radio station.
