The Dubious Claim That LA Will Get A Huge Economic Windfall From The 2028 Olympics

84

The same claim was made for cities that hosted the 2026 World Cup.

The Los Angeles Olympics Committee has put out an economic report that paints a glowing picture for the Los Angeles region because the 2028 Summer Olympics is in town. Of course any economic report released by an organization like an Olympic Committee needs to be taken with a grain of salt. After all, who commissioned the report? Also, if everything’s coming up roses, why does the LA Olympic Committee need 60,000 volunteers to “work” for the group during the Olympics period? The LA Area Chamber is ready and on X released a statement. ‘The world is coming to L.A. in 2028, and Downtown should be shining when it gets here. Safer streets, full storefronts, small businesses ready to grow with the Games.” Somehow the reality of higher gasoline prices, inflation, higher interest rates and the trickle-down impact of that on everyone is ignored.

The Los Angeles County Economic Development Corporation claims the 2028 Games could generate between approximately $20.5 billion to $40.6 billion in economic output and support approximately 126,000 to 224,000 jobs across Greater Los Angeles. What the report probably didn’t include is the disruption of local business during the event which includes shutting down streets and telling people to change their work routines during the Games. And something else that might not materialize due to global alliances being frayed. “The Games are expected to draw around two million visitors to Greater Los Angeles, generating approximately $1.6 billion to $4.3 billion in direct visitor spending in Los Angeles County alone. Hotels, restaurants, retailers and other local businesses will be among those benefiting from increased economic activity.” That was the same line used during the 2026 World Cup of soccer that took place during the summer. That economic activity never materialized and probably won’t in Los Angeles in 2028.
