The lease ends in 2032.
Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro is pretty confident that Eagles home games will be played in Philadelphia beyond the end of a stadium lease deal between the National Football League’s franchise owner Jeffrey Lurie and the local municipality in 2032. Shapiro knows that New Jersey has dangled offers in front of various owners of the National Basketball Association’s Philadelphia 76ers over the years but the various owners decided to stay in Philadelphia rather than cross the Delaware River to Camden. “Here’s what I can tell you for sure: It’s going to be in the city of Philadelphia,” Shapiro said. “And we’ll work with the Eagles once they determine what it is that they’re interested in doing.” Lurie is doing his homework and has entered into the stadium game.
The goal probably is to get a stadium bidding war started involving Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and New Jersey with Delaware also a possibility. “It’s a long process,” Lurie said earlier this year. “Whatever’s best for the fans. I mean, we don’t really go on a geographical basis. It’s whatever’s best for the fans and I can’t tell you where Cleveland is, Barcelona is. Bottom line is whatever’s best for the fans. I don’t want to leave any stone unturned. And that’s why we’re doing the research. It is interesting to look at the Barcelonas, Madrids and other pretty interesting renovations. And, of course, the new stadiums. You learn every time you see a new stadium. We’re going to learn from Nashville and Buffalo and whatever else, Cleveland may be coming online and what their design is. And I think if you’re just humble about it and open that you don’t have all the answers and do the exploratory work, you’ll end up with a better long-term situation.” Jeffrey Lurie’s stadium game has begun.
