The Marysville SuperSonics? There is a group of investors who would like to buy a National Basketball Association expansion franchise in the Seattle market. Marysville is a distant Seattle suburb which is about 35 miles north of the city and away from the corporate center of the market. During rush hour, it might take an hour to drive from Seattle to Marysville and that would be a major hurdle to overcome. Marysville has about 76,000 residents. BlackSun, a New York Private Equity firm, is working with the Tulalip Tribes to build a venue on tribal-owned land. BlackSun CEO Atonn Muhammad told The Seattle Times it can add enough investors to make a bid for up to $8.1 billion. The plan is to build an arena-village.
The owners of the National Hockey League’s Seattle Kraken franchise are also bidding to get an expansion franchise. The Seattle arena is about a mile and a half from downtown. Seattle last hosted an NBA team in 2008 because the team owner Clayton Bennett didn’t like the city’s arena and left for Oklahoma City. There is now a state-of-the-art venue in the city. National Basketball Association owners are considering expansion to Las Vegas and Seattle. There seems to be a number of groups that want to spend billions of dollars to bring an expansion team to Las Vegas. There are two groups that want an NBA expansion franchise in Seattle. Sports franchises are worth billions of dollars and if the NBA owners do decide to expand and charge between $6 and 9 billion for each franchise, each NBA owner would get a minimum of $400 million for doing nothing but welcoming in two new lodge members. The league also knows everything it needs to know about the Las Vegas and the Seattle markets. Las Vegas is entertainment, Seattle is a corporate behemoth.
