Tennis Canada is seeking taxpayers’ loonies for its project.
The city of Montréal and the Province of Québec may not be on Major League Baseball’s lead places for an eventual two team expansion but that doesn’t mean Montréal is being left behind in the world of sports. There is a massive project underway spending hundreds of millions of Canadian dollars on rebuilding the city’s Olympic stadium. Major League Soccer’s Montréal franchise could be moving into the building as the main tenant. Major League Baseball is uninterested in the venue as a potential home for a team. But in the one-time home of the Montréal Expos, Jarry Park, something is happening. Tennis Canada wants to do more business in the recreational area. Tennis Canada plans to build a new center-court stadium with a retractable roof as part of a major modernization of its facilities at Jarry Park. Tennis Canada just needs money, public money to go ahead with its plan. Tennis Canada is in discussions with the city of Montréal , the Province of Québec and the Canadian government about funding. There is no projected cost estimate at the moment.
The Canadian Open is played in both Montréal and Toronto in alternating years. Montréal has the event this year starting on August 1st. The Canadian tennis tournament is not a major tennis event but it is a lead up to the U. S. Open in New York. Tennis Canada hired a consultant to come up with a solution to its Montréal problem. There were three solutions. Renovate the existing stadium, build a new stadium within Jarry Park or relocate the tournament site elsewhere in the city. Tennis Canada concluded moving out of the Jarry Park area was too expensive. The plan would increase the present stadium’s capacity to approximately 15,000 seats and add up to four practice courts and a match court. All that is needed is money.
