The ownership hopes to build a new arema by 2031.
The owners of the National Basketball Association’s Dallas Mavericks franchise have picked out the location that they feel is the best spot for the business in the future. An old mall site in North Dallas which is about 12 miles away from the Mavericks present basketball arena. The operative word here is chosen because there is no formal agreement to buy the 104 acre property that once housed a shopping mall. The basketball business put out a statement about its plan complete with platitudes. “After seriously studying and considering several options, while working closely with the City of Dallas to identify possible locations for a new Dallas Mavericks arena and entertainment district, the Mavericks’ organization has entered into option agreements for the potential purchase of approximately 104 acres at the former Valley View Mall site. Done thoughtfully and with community engagement, a project of this scale will serve as a meaningful economic catalyst for Dallas and it’s residents. We believe in Dallas, and our priority has been clear from the beginning. Keeping the Dallas Mavericks in Dallas.”
The Mavericks ownership claims it will fund the project but there will be taxpayers assistance because no arena or stadium-village project is ever privately financed. There will be some gadget that could include a mechanism that tax money collected from a specially created entertainment district will go back to the developers instead of a municipality with the thought that the developer is creating jobs within the area. The basketball business wants to build an arena and the surrounding village by 2031 which is the year that the business’ lease deal with the arena ends. Identifying the parcel of land is probably the easiest part of the process for Mavericks ownership. There needs to be a purchase of the land and then a deal with Dallas elected officials for public funding and infrastructure.
