Vancouver And Las Vegas May Be Playing The MLS Stadium Game

The Vancouver franchise can leave the market after the 2026 season.

To be successful in the stadium game, an owner needs leverage and that dynamic is playing out in Vancouver, British Columbia and in Las Vegas for Major League Soccer. The ownership of the Vancouver Whitecaps franchise put the team up for sale in December 2024 because it felt it had a bad lease situation at the Vancouver stadium. There now seems to be two possible outcomes, sell the team to buyers who will move the team out of Vancouver or find land and public money to build a stadium somewhere in the Vancouver market. The Whitecaps’ ownership deal with the entity that controls the Vancouver stadium ends after the season. The business will be free to leave.

There is a potential suitor for the franchise in Las Vegas, a market that may soon be oversaturated with sports franchises. Thirty-year-old Grant Gustavson, whose mother is billionaire Tamara Gustavson, is heading up a group that has made a formal offer to acquire the Vancouver Whitecaps franchise and relocate the team to Las Vegas. Gustavson’s group also has a stadium problem. There is no MLS-state-of-the-art venue in Las Vegas although Gustavson’s investors put out a statement saying they are prepared to build a Las Vegas stadium. “The investment group will privately finance this endeavor and is not connected to any of the recently announced arena ideas in Las Vegas. In the coming weeks and months, we look forward to the opportunity to share more, however, out of respect for the league’s deliberations and community stakeholders, we are refraining from sharing details of our proposal. We look forward to continuing to work for a positive outcome for the game, the fans, the league and Las Vegas.” “Privately finance” usually means some taxpayers’ money ends up in the project. It’s now Vancouver’s turn at bat in the stadium game.
