Could A Denver Airline Company Be The Key To An NBA European Division?

A plane that can move at 1,100 miles an hour cuts travelling time.

Is a company named Boom Sonic the key to the National Basketball Association’s development of a European Division? Boom Technology, also known as Boom Supersonic is an American company based in Denver, Colorado that is developing a supersonic airliner called Overture. The proposed Boom Overture is designed to fly at 1,100 miles per hour and could accommodate 60 to 80 passengers. If things pan out, a trip from an east coast American city to London or Paris could take just three hours. Test flights are scheduled to begin in 2027. Within the next four years, the plane could be operational. NBA owners are looking to start a European League and the talk of an NBA European division has been around for more than two decades. The late David Stern during the time he was commissioner at the turn of the century wanted to establish a European Division by 2010. At that time, Stern said the notion of setting up shop in Europe was not feasible because of the lack of NBA style 21st-century arenas on the European continent. That has changed. There are NBA style buildings on the continent and the NBA does schedule European regular season contests.

“There’s no doubt that there’s amazing amount of top-notch basketball being played in Europe and great development of players. So we’re in this process right now, and this would be a stand-alone league,” Commissioner Adam Silver said about the possibility of an NBA European League forming. “But I would say, over time, I’ve been following, there’s a company called Boom Sonic, it’s saying by 2030, they’re going to have supersonic jets. Long term, I can definitely imagine we could have a division in Europe.” NBA owners are doing research on a European presence even though there may be some geopolitical dynamics with the situation in Iran and European thoughts about America.
